‘Don’t make me lose my job!’: Teacher punched student over racial slur, report says
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - A substitute teacher reportedly punched a student after the student called him a racial slur, according to an arrest report.
Re’Kwon Smith, a substitute teacher at Valley High School, was arrested April 25, after he reportedly fought a student in the hallway on campus. Smith, 27, faces four charges including battery, interfering with a student attending school, assault of a student and a threat to a student.
According to an arrest report, multiple witnesses told police that the fight started with an “animated argument.” Witnesses said Smith yelled, “Don’t make me lose my job!” to which the student responded “Do something,” then called him a racial slur, which led to Smith “charging” and hitting him.
In an interview with police, Smith confirmed he had punched the student after the student called him a racial slur.
The student apparently lost consciousness briefly after he was punched and was taken to the hospital for treatment after the fight, an arrest report said.
Smith was released from custody in court the Friday after the arrest. His next court hearing was set for May 28.
