City of Las Vegas to vote on ending Badlands lawsuits
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - The City of Las Vegas will consider settling the dispute over the Badlands Golf Club at the city council meeting on Wednesday.
The Las Vegas City Attorney will present a settlement agreement between $250 million and $286 million to end the legal battle between the City and the former owner of Badlands, developer Yohan Lowie.
The dispute began over the Badlands Golf Club at Alta Drive and S. Rampart Boulevard.
In 2015, developer Yohan Lowie bought the land intending to build homes. The city granted Lowie’s EHB Cos. the land entitlements, but did not approve the zoning, which ended the project. Lowie filed four different lawsuits claiming the city’s inability to approve the zoning made the land useless.
The courts agreed with Lowie’s claims and in December of 2024 the city agreed to pursue a settlement.
Lennar Homes now plans to build between 1,550 and 1,750 homes on the land. Neighbors opposed the original development back in 2015.
Back in early January Lennar Homes and existing residents who live nearby in the Queensridge community held a meeting to talk about the new plans. The residents appeared opposed to Lennar’s plans.
The city released this statement back in December when the council approved the deal to move forward with a settlement:
“The City Council’s unanimous vote this morning regarding Badlands is a major step forward in reaching a final settlement in the ongoing litigation. While the terms approved are nonbinding, and will require more work to finalize some remaining details, this item shows a willingness by all parties to bring this long-running issue to a conclusion. With this action today, the total payment from the city to the developer would be $636 million to collectively settle the litigation and acquire the property. The city would sell the property to Lennar for $350 million. This would occur through simultaneous escrows.”
