Las Vegas police to help protect community from romance scams
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - FOX5 has covered many scams that have costs people in Southern Nevada thousands of dollars, including an 82-year-old woman in Boulder City.
She lost $40,000 in a romance scam that started on Facebook. It involved a con about shipping gold.
The woman was going to send another $100,000, but that account had her daughter’s name on it too. The bank then contacted the daughter, who stopped the transfer and realized it was all a scam.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is holding two public events this week to prevent fraud.
The first event is scheduled Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 5 p.m. It is at the Bolden Area Command at 1851 Stella Lake Street.
Information will be provided on how to spot romance scam red flags and what to do for anyone who becomes a victim and more.
The second event will be held Wednesday, February 5 from 1-2 p.m. at the Clark County Library located at 1401 E. Flamingo Road.
Chase Bank officials and the Financial Crimes Section of LVMPD will educate people on romance and other common scams.
The public event will also provide information on how people can protect themselves from falling victim and what do if a loved one is impacted by fraud and identity theft. There will be a question-and-answer session for people who attend.
