Mayor Shelley Berkley sworn in as Goodman era ends
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - After a quarter century of Goodmans in the Mayor’s Office, the City of Las Vegas has rung in the Shelley Berkley era.
Berkley’s first words as mayor were a look back to the lasting legacy of Oscar and Carolyn Goodman.
“I would appreciate if everybody helped me in thanking and congratulating the Mayors Goodman,” she urged to a packed City Council chambers.
Berkley also nodded to her competitors for the Goodmans' former seat.
“I learned a lot from the candidates that were running,” she said. “I think that not only did it make me a better candidate, but it also hopefully will make me a better mayor.”
Also included in Berkley’s address was a look ahead to her term leading the city.
“We all have dreams,” she said. “I believe it’s my responsibility - it’s my job - along with the members of the city council, city staff, and employees, to create an environment that is conducive to helping our fellow citizens realize their dreams.”
Berkley also called for action from the people she now represents.
“Las Vegas needs your talent, your drive, your hard work if we’re all going to succeed,” she said, later invoking the words of John F. Kennedy, which she first heard on her 10th birthday. “Ask what you can do to make our city better. We will be here with you and for you, working together to make this community the envy of the country and the world.”
