LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - After their stadium on the Las Vegas Strip is built, the Athletics are now asking to play almost 10 percent of their home games away from it.

That’s according to the tentative non-relocation agreement between the team and the Clark County Stadium Authority, first reported by the Nevada Independent.

The A’s formally requested at least seven home games at “neutral sites,” which is at least double the number any other MLB team plays outside their home stadium.

“In all likelihood, those games will be played at the stadium here in Las Vegas, this is not a prediction of how many international games... which is really what Major League Baseball is expanding...,” Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority President Steve Hill told FOX5. “But the likelihood that six or seven would be played elsewhere is not high.”

The league has series in Mexico, Japan, and England most years – but they’re usually no more than two games each and a team won’t play in more than one per year.

The team’s request also has the chance to affect the bonding the A’s will be able to receive for the construction of the stadium.

“The revenue to pay back the bonds that were issued is based on the number of games and the revenue, the tax revenue that will be generated at the stadium,” Hill told us. “So if there is a potential for fewer games to be played at the stadium, the amount of public money invested in the stadium will be less because of that.”

FOX5 has reached out to A’s president Dave Kaval to clarify where these home games away from home would be played – but we have not heard back.

The board is expected to vote on this agreement on July 18.
