Lundy Elementary school to reopen August 1
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - In a Thursday town board advisory meeting Mt Charleston parents walked away hopeful. They can now look forward to sending their elementary students to Lundy in August.
It’s a fight they never gave up on and it was clear in Thursday’s meeting that they have the support of new leadership in the school and county.
August 1 is the date Lundy Elementary parents are counting down to. It is good news that was given by newly elected CCSD Trustee Lydia Dominguez.
“Some people say the enrollment is so low it is not worth reopening but it is worth reopening, Mt. Charleston is part of Clark County and they deserve to have a school open here,” Dominguez said.
In a packed town board meeting several members of CCSD and Clark County were present, including newly appointed commissioner April Becker.
“I know there has been a lot of lacking in your area and I want to make that right,” Becker told the residents.
It is a very different outcome from the back and forth we have seen in several meetings that focused on whether or not to reopen Mount Charleston’s only school.
In the past, the district said it would cost nearly $6 million to repair Lundy, however on Thursday it was clear the repairs were doable as the district is working with contractors.
“We want to make sure we hear you we hear the rural community we are here for you now and we want to make sure we represent you and provide accountability,” Dominguez said.
Accountability and someone that would listen is what parent Katie Reeh has been hoping for.
“I’m feeling relieved finally everything is coming together and people heard us,” Reeh said.
When asked why the community never gave up on the fight to reopen Lundy, Reeh said the school was the heart of the community.
The August 1st date is the goal to reopen Lundy, however it also depends on the weather and construction timelines.
As of right now some of the main fixes is the septic tank and upgrading some security systems.
The school already has two teachers ready to get started and they are looking for a custodian.
There is also talk of starting pre-K and that would add an additional 8 students.
