‘You smiled in my face and killed my baby behind my back’: Babysitter charged in 3-month-old’s death
LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC/Gray News) - The babysitter of a 3-month-old infant who died of a brain bleed and multiple skull fractures is facing a murder charge, KPLC reports.
Kairo Anderson, 3 months, was in the care of 40-year-old Shirley L. Sawyer for three hours on Jan. 22, said Symone Anderson, the baby’s mother. When Anderson got to Sawyer’s house, she thought he was asleep but later realized he was limp and unconscious, according to Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Kayla Vincent.
Kairo’s mother brought him to the hospital immediately, Vincent said. He was airlifted to a hospital out of town, where he died the next morning from a brain bleed.
Sawyer was arrested Tuesday on a count of first-degree murder in connection with Kairo’s death.
“I’m just happy that my baby can rest now in peace,” Anderson said.
Anderson is from California but moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana, in April to take care of her mother and have Kairo. She was supposed to return to California with her son this month.
“I’ve been knowing this girl [Sawyer] for a minute, and I couldn’t believe it. You smiled in my face, and you killed my baby behind my back,” she said.
Sawyer is being held on a $2.5 million bond. The investigation is ongoing.
